NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY; A STUDENT’S JOURNEY

by Hanis Sofea Zulkifli

MOHAMMAD Azmisuhaimi Bin Mokhtar, a final year student in Consumer Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) should be made an example for youths venturing into business.

Like many other entrepreneurs, Azmihad gone through a few bumps during the start of his business. He once lost his money to aMulti-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. According to Azmi, it all started when he was in his second semester as he was lured by his friend to join the MLM. It took him a while to realise the situation he was in but by the time he does, it was already too late. Azmi was devastated at first but managed to keep this experience as a lesson for future reference.

After a quick taste of bad experience, Azmi found himself enjoying business. He started to learn more about business from his friends and seniors. It was during that time when Azmi was introduced by his friend to ONEXOX Prepaid Plan. “In the new age, everybody uses their phone for the internet, which is why I was positive that selling prepaid plans was the best option for me” said Azmi.

When everything seemed to have come together, Azmi was faced with another challenge, his father’s approval. He said “my parents were not so keen on me venturing into business. My dad especially was fixed on me to focus only on my studies.” However, he took the liberty to prove to his father that he can manage his time and focus. After a year, his father finally gave in and support Azmi’s business.

Due to Azmi’s outstanding work, he was later offered a job with CELCOM, one of Malaysia’s popular mobile operator. “That was easily the highlight of my career. CELCOM is a well-known brand and it was not easy for me to come across an offer like that. Obviously, I took the offer.” stated Azmi, grateful.

In every business, standing out among others is always a challenge. The same goes for Azmi, selling prepaid plans is common among students. Thus, it was hard for Azmi to attract customers. He explained that he does not make money his priority “Business is not all about the money. You need to be committed, responsible, disciplined and most importantly, dependable. If you want to be successful you need to have a purpose, and mine is to help others gain what they want.”

“As a student of consumer studies, I take into account the consumer’s needs very seriously. I always ask them what they want and then try to connect the dots. See, every prepaid plans have their own benefit and I always try to give them the best service in order to cater to their demands” continued Azmi. Other than that, he also uses the social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp to promote his business.

Getting involved with telecommunication business has really opened his eyes towards business as a whole. From getting scammed to selling CELCOM prepaid plans, each and every hardship that came along the way has given Azmi a chance to grow and learn.

He has no intention of stopping. In fact, he wishes to have his very own telecommunication shop one day.
